Official: Parasakthi release date advanced; to directly compete with Jana Nayagan for opening weekend collection

We had earlier broken out the news that the release Parasakthi, the upcoming Tamil film starring actor Sivakarthikeyan, has been advanced by a few days. The makers on Monday announced it official, making it a stiff weekend competitor for Vijay’s Jana Nayagan.

Parasakthi release officially advanced

The Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Parasakthi, is one of the two major Tamil films which will be hitting big screens for Pongal. While there were speculations that the film will be advanced by a few days, we at OTTplay, had confirmed that the film will release on January 10. Now, on Monday, the production house has officially announced that Parasakthi will arrive on January 10, from its initial release date of January 14. This means, Parasakthi will be competing with Vijay’s Jana Nayagan (on January 9) for the weekend box office collection, while earlier the latter was supposed to have a solo run for a week.

In a statement, the production team said, “This decision has been taken after extensive discussions and repeated requests from exhibitors and distributors worldwide, who have expressed strong confidence in the film's theatrical potential during this period.” On this note, Tamil cinema will see strong competition between Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi for this Pongal, and theatres seeing some respite for the dry December that they had to face.

Written and directed by filmmaker Sudha Kongara, Parasakthi is a period drama which revolves around the anti-Hindi agitations that took place in Tamil Nadu. The film is set in the 1960s, and stars Sivakarthikeyan, Atharvaa, Sreeleela in her Tamil debut and Ravi Mohan as the antagonist. It is Sivakarthikeyan’s 25th film and composer GV Prakash’s 100th.

Parasakthi will feature Sivakarthikeyan and Atharvaa as brothers with opposing ideology, and Sreeleela as the former’s love interest. The film was initially mounted with Suriya who later backed out of the project. Reportedly, ZEE5 has bagged the post-theatrical streaming rights of Parasakthi for Rs 52 crore.
