Director Kushal Gowda’s Once Upon a Time in Jamaligudda was one of the most anticipated films with Dhananjaya in the lead to release last year. 2022 was the year of experimentation for the actor, who had six releases, including some in which he only had cameos, but none of them sparked interest in audiences eventually. Once Upon a Time in Jamaligudda had decent pre-release buzz, given how guarded the team was about the film’s subject and that Dhananjaya and Yash Shetty’s characters, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, looked intriguing. But when it released in theatres, it did not set the cash registers ringing. The film, we hear, is now set for its OTT outing. Sun Network had picked up the satellite and digital rights with the OTT premiere set for March 17 on SunNXT.

The film, which was first announced as a September release, but was then pushed to close out the year on December 30, paired Dhananjaya with Aditi Prabhudeva. Speaking about the film at the trailer launch, Dhananjaya had admitted that Once Upon a Time in Jamaligudda was not a film for all. He said, “Once Upon a Time in Jamaligudda is a feel-good film. I understand that my fans will expect me in a different avatar, with action and other commercial elements, but sometimes, when certain stories come to you, there is an urge to do it. Simple stories also need to be told. These are the ‘different’ subjects that need to be encouraged. This film is one such attempt, which has been made with a lot of goodwill and passion and is meant for family audiences.”

Dhananjaya had added that director Kushal had literally chased him for month to convince him to play Hiroshima. “The way he kept following up with me, I could not say no to him. But more importantly, the outline of the story that he’d told me seemed immensely intriguing. I found in him a very passionate filmmaker, which is very important for any project. Interestingly, when I took up the film, I told Kushal that I may not have dates for at least a year. All that he said was that he needed me during September-October only, as he was planning to shoot it during a particular season,” Dhananjaya had said.
