O'Romeo has been cleared for release after a civil court in Mumbai noted that the case was filed very close to theatrical date for the movie.

Shahid Kapoor-led O’Romeo has been cleared for its theatrical release on February 13. The movie had come under legal trouble recently after Hussain Ustara’s daughter Sanober Shaikh claimed that the movie was based on her father’s life. The Mumbai civil court ruled in favour of the makers and refused to stall the film’s release in the coming week.

Hussain Ustara’s daughter Sanober Shaikh had claimed that the makers took no prior consent from her or her family members while making O’Romeo. Sanober filed a civil suit against producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Vishal Bhardwaj. She also named Mafia Queens of Mumbai book’s author Hussain Zaidi.

Civil court judge H C Shende noted that Sanober had demanded monetary compensation early on. In her lawsuit, Sanober claimed that the movie’s theme is based on her deceased father who ‘has been portrayed a gangster.’ The opposition argued that O’Romeo is a work of fiction. Advocates Ashwin Bhalekar and Rishi Bhuta also submitted Sanober’s demands ranging from Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 5 crores.

The court further noted that the lawsuit was filed ahead of the film’s release. “The plaintiff was well aware of the proposed film much prior to filing suit, yet approached the court only when the release date was imminent,” it said. Sanober’s advocate has now issued a statement claiming that the case will be moved to Bombay High Court.
