With Jana Nayagan out of the Pongal race, all eyes are on Parasakthi as censor delays loom. Will Sivakarthikeyan get a solo festive release or add to Tamil cinema’s growing list of postponements?

Parasakthi, the Sivakarthikeyan-starrer period political drama, is slated for release on January 10, after advancing it from January 14. However, with only a couple of days left for it, the makers are yet to get the censor certificate, almost sharing the same fate as another Tamil film Jana Nayagan, which has been postponed now. Now, with the release of Jana Nayagan out of the Pongal race, Parasakthi is touted as the only prominent Tamil release for this festival. Will the Sivakarthikeyan film have a solo Pongal release, or face the same fate as Jana Nayagan?

Parasakthi is an upcoming Tamil film starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role. The film was first marked for release on January 14, but later advanced to January 10. Parasakthi was supposed to have shared the weekend box office with Jana Nayagan (scheduled to release on January 9). However, with the latter now out of the race, Parasakthi is touted to be the only major big-ticket film this January for Pongal. On the other hand, the release of Parasakthi is also in trouble, with the censor certificate yet to be issued.
As per sources in the know, Parasakthi makers are expected to get a U/A certificate from the CBFC board, and have been informed of the same. But the film-makers are yet to receive the certificate officially. This means the theatre owners have also not communicated about the update, with many still unclear if Parasakthi will release or not on the said date. If Parasakthi releases on time, it means Sivakarthikeyan will have a solo release ahead of the Pongal festivities. However, if not, Tamil cinema will face double postponed delays, leaving the dry spell to continue since December.
Directed by Sudha Kongara, Parasakthi is a period drama set in 1965 and talks about the anti-Hindi agitations that took place in Tamil Nadu. Sivakarthikeyan, Sreeleela, Atharvaa, and Ravi Mohan play prominent roles in the film. GV Prakash has scored music.
