There was buzz that Malamaal Weekly has been revived for a sequel. HT City reached out to Paresh Rawal for an update on the movie. "Yes, it is true. I am doing the film," the actor said, thus confirming the news.
Interestingly, Paresh Rawal and Priyadarshan had already worked on a spin-off of the movie in 2012. Titled Kamal Dhamaal Malamaal, it featured Rawal along with the original starcast including Om Puri and Rajpal Yadav.
Malamaal Weekly also featured Riteish Deshmukh as one of the leading heroes. The story revolved around a villager winning the lottery but dying soon after. When some officers arrive to the village to confirm the identity and distribute the lottery amount, they are met with several people claiming they are the lottery winner. This leads to a chaotic but hilarious unfolding of events. The film also featured Shakti Kapoor and late Asrani. Reema Sen and Sudha Chandran were among the popular female actors in the movie.
Among his releases, Paresh Rawal will soon be seen in Bhooth Bangla. His look from the film is yet to be revealed. He will then appear in Haiwaan as well as Welcome To The Jungle. Paresh Rawal is also expected to be a part of Bhagam Bhag sequel, apart from Malamaal Weekly. While the actor has returned to Hera Pheri 3, most likely as Baburao, the movie will not go on floors in 2026.
Q. Is Malamaal Weekly 2 officially happening?
A. As of March 2026, Paresh Rawal has confirmed returning to Malamaal Weekly 2. While Priyadarshan has expressed interest in revisiting the world of Lilaram in the past, no script has been greenlit.
Q. Is Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal a sequel?
Technically, no. The 2012 film Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal was marketed as a "spiritual successor" or a reboot rather than a direct narrative sequel. It featured a similar rural setting and several returning cast members (like Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav) but followed different characters and a separate plot.
Q. Why hasn't it been made yet?
A. The primary delays are attributed to scripting challenges and the director's busy schedule with other franchises, such as the upcoming Hera Pheri 3 and Bhool Bhulaiyaa sequels. Priyadarshan has often stated he only wants to return to these characters if the humor matches the original's standard.
