Pookkaalam, helmed by Ganesh Raj, is set to release on this leading OTT platform
Malayalam audiences needn’t wait longer to catch actor Vijayaraghavan’s best performance in the past few decades, on an OTT platform. The veteran actor’s Pookkaalam, which is helmed by Aanandam director Ganesh Raj, is gearing up for its digital release.
The movie, which had hit theatres last month, has Vijayaraghavan and KPAC Leela in lead roles as a nonagenarian couple whose marital life is in trouble. Pookkaalam also has an eclectic cast with Basil Joseph, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Johny Antony, Jagadeesh, Annu Antony, Arun Kurian and Suhasini Mani Ratnam in pivotal roles.

What is Pookkaalam’s story?
The movie, which is also scripted by Ganesh Raj, is inspired by a real-life event that happened in Italy a few years ago. The filmmaker revealed this during an interview with OTTplay. “It’s about an event I read about. I felt it was novel and we could place it well in Kerala’s socio-political milieu. We also get to explore a lot of things that we otherwise couldn’t. That was the initial spark; the characters being 100 years old and everything else came second,” he said.
In Pookkaalam, the happily married life of Ittoop and Kochuthressia takes a turn when the former finds a love letter that was addressed to his wife. Though the letter was sent 50 years ago, Ittoop’s ego takes a beating and he decides to seek a divorce, against the plea of his children and grandchildren. This also affects the wedding of his grand-daughter, who then decides to seek out the truth and also the incidents that led to the alleged affair.
When and where to watch Pookkaalam?
Pookkaalam is set to begin streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from May 19. The movie will release along with Basil and Indrans’ family drama Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham on Sony LIV and Soubin Shahir and Binu Pappu’s family entertainer Ayalvaashi on Netflix on the same date.
