Praveen Tej on Maarigallu’s Kantara resemblance: The basic plot may seem similar, but the series is a thriller

Maarigallu, a 7-episode thriller series by Devaraj Poojary, is headed to OTT. Praveen Tej plays one of the main characters.

Kannada actor Praveen Tej makes his web series debut this week with Maarigallu, which will drop on Zee5 (via OTTplay Premium also) on October 31. Directed by Matsyagandha fame Devaraj Poojary, Maarigallu is about a long-lost treasure and a dangerous mission to track it down. Praveen is Varadha, who works for the local landlord played by Gopalkrishna Deshpande.

“The basic premise revolves around the hunt for a lost treasure, as has been revealed in the trailer. Rangayana Raghu sir is an official from the archaeology department, whom I join on this mission in the hope of making some money. The narrative follows how we go about deciphering the clues and finding the treasure and what happens once we do. The problem is that the treasure is under divine guardianship of the Maari deity. So, do we get the treasure or will it remain hidden? That’s the crux of Maarigallu,” explains Praveen.

Is Maarigallu like Kantara?

Doesn’t this sound a lot like the plot of Kantara? “Honestly, initially when I heard just the log line, that’s the exact thought I had, but once I read the script, I realized there is far more than meets the eye. Yes, there is a divine touch, but there are a lot of thrilling moments in the story and the execution is even better, especially the visuals by cinematographer SK Rao,” says the actor, adding that the show was shot in only 23 days.

Maarigallu’s cast also includes Mime Ramdas, Prashant Siddi, Ninad Harithsa, Nidhi Hegde, AS Suraj, among others. Given that the show only has 7 episodes and that the average episode duration has been less than 20 minutes each, is that enough for character development and does Praveen get his due? “Maarigallu’s average episode length is 30 minutes, which gives it a total run-time of over 3 hours. So, there is enough time to establish and develop each of the main characters. It’s been a good experience for me,” adds Praveen, who was last seen in Jigar.
