Prithviraj Sukumaran seems to have hit a purple patch, at least as far as his theatrical releases are concerned. The actor’s latest release Kaduva, which is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video from August 4, recently crossed Rs 50 crore in the box office, earning him a unique feat.

Prithviraj now is the only other actor apart from Mohanlal to have five films that have crossed Rs 50 crore at the box office. The actor has been on a golden run since 2019 with Driving Licence, Ayyappanum Koshiyum, Jana Gana Mana and Kaduva all being hugely profitable ventures for its producers.

Kaduva, which is helmed by Shaji Kailas, is also Prithviraj’s fourth consecutive superhit and only the fourth Malayalam movie this year to earn more than Rs 3 crore in the first day itself after Mohanlal’s Aaraattu and Mammootty’s BheeshmaParvam and CBI 5: The Brain.

The film, which also has Vivek Oberoi, Samyuktha Menon and Arjun Ashokan, has Prithviraj essaying the role of a wealthy rubber planter who goes up against a top police official. Kaduva released in theatres after a slew of controversies ranging from plagiarism charges to defamation cases.

The release too was pushed by a week – from the initial date of June 30 to August 7 – after the court had asked the makers to change the protagonist’s name from Kuruvachan following a complaint from a Pala-based man named Jose Kuruvinakunnel, who had alleged that the movie is based on his life. He had also approached the court last week, seeking a stay on the film’s OTT release after providing proof that the makers had changed the name only in the version that released in India.

Prithviraj, meanwhile, has Rathish Ambat’s Theerpu and Alphonse Puthren’s Gold as his next theatrical releases. The actor is also part of Shaji Kailas’ Kaapa and is next set to join the sets of Prashanth Neel’s Salaar.
