Pathaan controversy: Raees director Rahul Dholakia supports Shah Rukh Khan, says 'bigots, please shut up'

Pathaan continues to make headlines as fans get ready for Shah Rukh Khan's comeback to the big screen after five years. Polarizing opinions have been expressed about Deepika Padukone's clothing choices in the first song, "Besharam Rang." The actress is depicted in bikinis on the Spanish beaches where the song is set. While some online users have criticised patriarchal responses about what clothes women should or shouldn't wear, others are asking for a "boycott" of the movie. But Shah Rukh Khan is supported by the industry. Rahul Dholakia, the director of Raees, has pleaded with everyone to denounce the racist assault on the superstar.

Rahul Dholakia took to his Twitter account and wrote, “The hate attack (for years now) on @iamsrk should be condemned by one and all in the film industry. SRK has contributed more to our fraternity and India as an ambassador of entertainment & cinema; than most people have. Please tell these bigots with idiotic theories to Shut Up.”

This comes after Maharashtra BJP MLA Ram Kadam remarked that the film that insults Hindutva will not be permitted and Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra raised concerns about offensive costumes in "Besharam Rang."

Shah Rukh Khan spoke about the "hate bandwagon" during the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival's opening ceremony yesterday. King Khan said, “The collective narrative of our times is shaped by social media. Contrary to the belief that social media will affect cinema negatively, I believe cinema has an even more important role to play now.” We haven't been able to meet for a long, but things are starting to return to normal now, he continued. "We are all happy and I am the happiest. And I have no qualms in saying, that no matter what the world does, me and you, and all positive people in the world are alive.”

Meanwhile, Pathaan stars Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. It is backed by Aditya Chopra’s YRF. The film is set to release on January 25, 2023, in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
