The state of Kerala marks a day of mourning on December 20, 2025, as it comes to terms with the demise of Malayalam actor–writer-director Sreenivasan. Shocked fans and industry colleagues have been paying their last respects to the prolific personality, who played a key role in shaping Malayalam cinema. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, a long-time collaborator of Sreenivasan, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, who studied with Sreenivasan at the film institute, and iconic singer KS Chithra and actor-filmmaker Prithviraj have paid condolences to the legend.

In his first reaction after hearing about Sreenivasan’s demise, iconic Malayalam actor Mohanlal said that their bond extended beyond actors.
Remarking that they have acted in several films together, Mohanlal told Asianet News, “Those films asked sarcastic questions about society. When you watch movies, they appear as humorous films, but they have a far deeper meaning. He viewed both films and life differently”
Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Gandhinagar Second Street, Mukunthetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu and Nadodikaattu are some of the popular Sreenivasan-penned films starring Mohanlal.
Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, who was Sreenivasan’s classmate at the Madras Film Institute, also expressed his shock over the Malayalam actor’s demise
“Very shocking to know that my good friend Sreenivasan is no more. He was my classmate in the Film Institute. Excellent actor and a very good human being. Let his soul rest in peace,” Rajinikanth told Asianet News.
Rajinikanth had also acted in the Tamil remake of Sreenivasan-penned film Katha Parayumbol.

Iconic singer KS Chithra took to social media to pay her condolences. “I am deeply saddened to hear about Sreenivas sir’s passing. I was fortunate enough to sing for so many of his movies,” she wrote on Twitter.
Popular actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran called him the greatest-ever writer/director/actor, as he bid adieu to the legend. “Thank you for all the laughs and thoughts,” the Ponman actor wrote on Instagram.
Young actor director Basil Joseph also thanked Sreenivasan for all the laughter and warmth. “You were a big part of our childhood,” the Ponman actor penned on Facebook.

A. Malayalam actor-director Sreenivasan died on December 20, 2025. He was suffering from several ailments and had been under treatment. He was going to Amrita Hospital in Kochi for dialysis when he fell unwell and was taken to a hospital in Thrippunithura, where he breathed his last.
