Debutant filmmaker Jithu Madhavan’s Romancham is the latest superhit in the Mollywood box office. The horror-comedy, which was reportedly made on a budget not exceeding Rs 4Cr, has already crossed Rs 30 crore in Kerala box office and has collected around Rs 50 Cr in worldwide gross.

The film, which has Soubin Shahir, Siju Sunny, Arjun Ashokan and Sajin Gopu, is also co-produced by director Johnpaul George, who before its release had pleaded with audiences to watch it in theatres. His fears proved to be unfounded, with the film now becoming the second superhit of this year, after Unni Mukundan’s Malikappuram.

This past weekend, the movie collected over Rs 3 crore from Kerala box office alone. Its total from overseas and rest of India collections amounted up to Rs 20 crore, as per trade analysts. None of the past week’s other releases, which included Bhavana’s Ntikkakkakkoru Premandarnn, Anu Sithara’s Santhosham, Arjun Ashokan’s Pranaya Vilasam, Anikha Surendran’s Oh My Darling and Nithya Das’ Pallimani, created any sort of impact at the box office.

While the box office figures would definitely come as a boost to its relatively young cast and crew, it wasn’t a smooth ride at all for the team. Jithu, in an earlier interview with OTTplay, said, “The confidence hit rock-bottom when the film’s release was postponed last year. Before our initial release date in 2022, we were confident about the movie as we had a preview and we were delighted about its response. But the period after we had pushed the release date, we were all a bit demoralised and we even started panicking because we didn’t know how people would receive the film. You can never predict how the audience would react to a movie.”

Meanwhile, the film’s OTT rights were snapped by Disney+ Hotstar ahead of its theatrical release. The film is expected to begin streaming on the platform by March end. Disney+ Hotstar had also bought the rights for Malikappuram earlier this year.
