Saswata Chatterjee as Bhanu Bandyopadhyay

Saswata Chatterjee will play legendary actor Bhanu Bandyopadhyay on screen. It is Bhanu Bandyopadhyay’s 101 birth anniversary on August 26. To mark the occasion, the first look of Saswata as Bhanu Bandyopadhyay was revealed. In the photos, Saswata is looking strikingly similar to the actor. Directed by Sayantan Ghosal, the Jomaloye Jibonto Bhanu will be released in April next year.

As per reports, Jomaloye Jibonto Bhanu – a pun on his iconic film Jomaloye Jibonto Manush – will not be a biopic of the actor. It will tell a story of what happens when Bhanu reaches heaven. The story will be about him – his famous and most cherished movie scenes, magic moments and dialogue. Bhanu’s immortal dialogues, like ‘Masima, malpo khamu’ from Sharey Chuattar and others, will recur in the film. Besides, the story will bring some fantastic actors from that golden era. According to the makers, the film will take the audience through a nostalgic journey down memory lane.

Before playing Bhanu, Saswata Chatterjee played a character based on Ritwick Chakraborty in Meghe Dhaka Tara and Uttam Kumar in Achena Uttam. In an interview with Ei Samay, the actor said that playing Bhanu Bandyopadhyay is a challenge and understandably so. Playing an iconic character like Bhanu Bandyopadhyay is likely to be scrutinised by the audience. Though he could not reveal much about the film.

Saswata’s makeup was done by Bengal’s very own prosthetic makeup artist Somnath Kundu. Somnath’s creation of Satyajit Ray’s look on Jeetu Kamal in Dutta’s Aparajito has been lauded globally. According to several critics, his makeup is identified as one of the pillars of the success of the film. Earlier, he also created the look of Mahananda – a character based on Mahashweta Devi – on Gargee RoyChowdhury and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on Prosenjit Chatterjee in Gumnami.
