Sattamum Needhiyum actor Namritha MV plays a lead role in the series, as she talks about playing author-backed roles, why OTT space is less down south and more about the show

“I had gotten a call from the team, and met with the writer of Sattamum Needhiyum, Soorya Prathap. He briefed me about the role and recalled me watching in Meme Boys. I was not able to get an episodic break-up, but I found the role interesting,” Namritha says.
The young actor plays the role of Aruna, a junior advocate who is seen alongside actor Saravanan playing an aged advocate who takes up an important case. “I have not been approached for the role of a lawyer so far. I was not just someone’s pair but something more to the character with depth,” she added.
Having done a couple of web series already, Namritha says that web series are more dynamic as opposed to films. “There are more scenes, scope for a lot more characterisation, widen the performance and give variations. I also like that the fact that web series is a more well-rounded perspective of the story itself, rather than seeing it from a single viewpoint.” Namritha says that Sattamum Needhiyum is a story of an underdog, as she adds that the series will explore the protagonist who comes back to arguing inside the courtroom. Her character, Aruna, is an aide to the character.
Speaking about how there are very less shows and long-format storytelling down south as opposed to films, Namritha weighs in her perspective as an actor. “I think for a lot of people who start off, the end goal is to be on the big screen. But personally, speaking as an actor, I believe that the journey is the same no matter where the output is being played; small screen or theatres,” she adds.
The actor says that the OTT space promises more author-backed roles, given she herself had gone to the writer of the show to clarify all her doubts. “I think Soorya sir too took that creative space, and did not include any commercial element for the sake of it. It was on the sets that I used to ask him. There are places in the story where my character Aruna is not aware of Sundara Moorthy's (Saravanan’s character) activities and what he finds out. I felt that if there are parts that Aruna does not know, it is better that Namritha also doesn’t know. So that the ambiguity is there and can bring some genuineness to the craft.”
Namritha says that a takeaway from Sattamum Needhiyum is that her realisation of pulling off roles that are beyond the typecast love interest roles usually written for women. “Aruna is different from what I am, so it really helped me to gain confidence in roles that are not my personality alone,” Namritha mentions.
