The Japanese film Scarlet is now streaming on Prime Video, but it is currently available for rent and will soon be available for all subscribers.
Scarlet follows Scarlet, who is poisoned by her uncle Claudius (voiced by Koji Yakusho) after failing to avenge her father’s murder. She awakens in the Otherworld, a surreal realm where spirits from different eras coexist, all striving to reach a mysterious stairway to heaven.
As in Belle and Wolf Children, Hosoda explores themes of parent-child bonds and emotional trauma. The story revolves around the conflict between Scarlet's intense desire for revenge and the compassionate guidance of a modern paramedic named Hijiri (Masaki Okada), who encourages her to choose mercy over revenge. The narrative explores whether Scarlet can not only fulfil her desire for revenge but also overcome her trauma and embrace a future free from hatred.
Scarlet is hailed for its ambitious visual design, which is described as a "visual feast". It blends traditional 2D animation with high-tech 3D CGI to create a vivid, chaotic world, a feature similar to the "U" world in Belle.
Scarlet, voiced by Mana Ashida, is a skilled, sword-wielding princess driven by intense rage. Hijiri, voiced by Masaki Okada, is a modern-day medic who brings a voice of reason and empathy.
Apart from them, Claudius, voiced by Koji Yakusho, is the treacherous uncle and usurper king, while King Amlet, voiced by Masachika Ichimura, is Scarlet’s murdered father. Gertrude, voiced by Yuki Saito, is the Queen. Meanwhile, Scarlet is written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda.
