Operation Java director Tharun Moorthy offers update on the remake of the thriller
Malayalam director Tharun Moorthy’s debut venture Operation Java was one of the most-talked about films after it released. The film, which was among the first Malayalam releases to hit theatres after they reopened post the pandemic lockdowns in the State, also good a great reception when it began streaming on ZEE5 in 2021.
Operation Java, which had Lukman Avaran and Balu Varghese in the lead, revolved around two engineers who are roped in as temporary employees to help out the Kerala cyber police crack three major cases. The police procedural also showcased the struggles in the lives of the two unemployed youth, while highlighting the workings of the digital investigation wing of the cops.
Last year, the filmmaker had confirmed that the film’s remake rights for several languages have been sold. In an exclusive chat with OTTplay recently, Tharun gave us update on its status. “Last I heard, the scripting is complete as the writers had called, asking for a few suggestions. I am guessing there will be an update soon,” said the director. The filmmaker, who also helmed Saudi Vellakka, revealed that he has also been approached to helm Bollywood films.
The director is delighted about the feedback that Saudi Vellakka, which revolves around the challenges faced by the people due to the delay in legal verdicts in the country, has been getting since it began streaming on Sony LIV last week. “Operation Java also got a wide reach after it had released on the OTT platform,” he said.
When asked if the remake rights of Saudi Vellakka too have been sold and he said the deal has not yet been finalised. Meanwhile, the filmmaker will be collaborating with Saudi Vellakka’s producers Urvashi Theatres again for another film, which he says will be markedly different from both Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka.
