Sekhar Kammula's Love Story has a special connection with this iconic Telugu film

After a slew of postponements, Sekhar Kammula's romantic drama, Love Story is set to hit theatres the next weekend. Featuring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles, the film, set in rural Telangana, revolves around the story of a small-time Zumba coach Revanth and an engineering graduate Monica, who share a common passion for dance. The film's release date, September 24, will be a memorable one for its lead actor Naga Chaitanya, for it also marks the 50th release anniversary of the iconic Telugu film Prema Nagar, starring the actor's legendary grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Vanisri and Kaikala Satyanarayana in lead roles.

This connection between Prema Nagar and Love Story was revealed by Naga Chaitanya's father, actor Nagarjuna Akkineni when he had shared his views on the trailer of the upcoming release. Sharing similar posters of both the films (along with their release dates) where the lead actors are seen embracing each other, Nagarjuna added,"#LoveStory Looking good ra chay!! All the best!!" For the uninitiated, Prema Nagar, that released on September 24, 1971, is a trendsetter in Telugu cinema and revived the fortunes of the popular banner, Suresh Productions, after it had to taste a flurry of flops in the late 1960s.

Prema Nagar, that released a few months after ANR's rural entertainer Dasara Bullodu, set the box office on fire despite torrential rains threatening to affect its theatrical run. The hit pairing of ANR-Vanisri, KS Prakasa Rao's direction and KV Mahadevan's superb music score helped its cause. The film was later remade in Tamil and Hindi, featuring Siva Ganesan and Rajesh Khanna in the lead roles, and the remakes too tasted similar success. While it'll be a little too much to compare Love Story and Prema Nagar, the former certainly has all the ammunition to click with crowds.

Love Story's success is crucial to breathing a new lease of life into theatres across Telugu states that are struggling to draw audiences in large numbers. The film's trailer has hit 5 million views already and names like Sekhar Kammula, Sai Pallavi in addition to Ch Pawan's mellifluous compositions should ensure a decent opening at the theatres. Telugu OTT platform aha has bagged the streaming rights of Love Story.
