Shekhar Kapur claims that if he had the rights to his 1987 success, Mr India he would have made a sequel by now, based on the original film but with a different premise. Mr. India, a sci-fi action film starring Anil Kapoor, the late Sridevi, and Amrish Puri, was produced by Boney Kapoor and Surinder Kapoor.

A sequel, dubbed Mr. India 2 was announced in 2011, according to reports. In 2020, Zee Studios announced that Ali Abbas Zafar had been hired to direct a trilogy called Mr. India, a reimagining of the cult classic film. This project's current state is unknown.

Aside from his Elizabeth film series, Kapur stated he hasn't intentionally avoided producing IP (intellectual property)-driven work, but he doesn't want to remake a film.

The filmmaker told PTI that the problem is that he is always on the lookout for excitement. What motivates him is the thrill of the unknown, and once an IP is discovered, one has an addiction.

Kapur further shared that it has to be close by or else people will ask how it's the same. He would have done a Mr. India 2 by now if I had had the rights to Mr. India. He, on the other hand, does not. On the sidelines of the Media and Entertainment Fortnight at the India Pavilion during EXPO2020 Dubai, the 76-year-old director told PTI.

Kapur is now poised to direct Amish Tripathi's critically acclaimed novel series, Shiva Trilogy which will be adapted into a television series.

The FTII president stated that he has never attempted to develop an IP before, but he believes now is the time.

The director also disclosed that the Elizabethan film franchise, featuring Cate Blanchett as the eponymous British monarch, was originally intended to be a trilogy.
