Sister Midnight premise

Karan Kandhari's genre-bending feature directorial debut, Sister Midnight stars Apte as Uma, a young woman from a rural town who was married off in an arranged marriage and then relocates to Mumbai. The story deals with the claustrophobia she feels as she adjusts to her new life in a small room on the side of the road with her husband, Gopal, played by Ashok Pathak.

The film's depiction of Uma's failure to meet society's standards of a housewife sets it apart from conventional home dramas. Her growing irrationality and feralness are outward manifestations of her inner turmoil at her husband's drinking habits and her feelings of isolation. A "rebellion against the manual of life" unfolds as the protagonist, Uma, has an insatiable appetite for raw meat and animal blood, setting in motion a chain reaction that combines aspects of black comedy and surrealism.

Panchayat and Laila Majnu actor Ashok Pathak, who plays her emotionally distant husband, provides assistance. Along with Smita Tambe, the cast features Chhaya Kadam as Sheetal, a realistic neighbour who provides an alternative perspective on married life.

The film's unique visual design and score are its technical highlights. Using 16mm film, cinematographer Sverre Sørdal captures a rough and textured Mumbai. As his debut venture into film scores, Paul Banks—lead singer of the American rock band Interpol—composed the soundtrack.
