Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par is finally set to premiere on SonyLIV (OTTplay Premium) for its OTT release, following a successful theatrical run in June 2025 and a subsequent pay-per-view, rent-only release on YouTube. It is also the first Hindi theatrical film to premiere on SonyLIV. On March 14, the streaming platform unveiled its slate for the upcoming three months (April, May, and June) and revealed when Sitaare Zameen Par will be released.

When to watch Sitaare Zameen Par on OTT?

Although the release date has not been disclosed, SonyLIV announced that Sitaare Zameen Par will be released on the platform on a Friday in April.

Why did Aamir Khan skip the standard eight-week window?

By the time of the digital shift, Sitaare Zameen Par had already earned a remarkable Rs. 167 crore in Indian box office. Khan has criticised this eight-week theatrical window, favoured by streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video, as "flawed" and "cannibalistic" of the film business. Ditching a subscription release, he opted for a six-week rental model at Rs. 100 per view on YouTube, which gave viewers the option of a one-time payment rather than "free" access.

Khan's experiment with 'personal cinema' on YouTube carries significant financial and professional risks. Sony originally owned 25% of the film, but the partnership reportedly broke down after Khan skipped the usual streaming path, causing Sony to miss out on a major launch for SonyLIV.

After initially turning down OTT offers to defy industry conventions, Aamir Khan is now welcoming the conventional streaming route.

Meanwhile, on his podcast The Town with Matthew Belloni, Khan revealed he had to buy out Sony’s share to take full control of the film’s distribution. This move increased the production budget from Rs. 96 crore to around Rs. 133 crore, with Khan personally spending Rs. 25–30 crore. Khan claimed his YouTube “private cinema” model earned 20 times more than a typical digital release. But critics pointed out that he gave up a guaranteed payout, while he countered that the 55-45% revenue share with the platform makes the gamble worthwhile.
