Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 opened with Rs 6.75 crore, saw stronger response in tier-2 cities, but lagged behind his recent hits; weekend growth remains key amid Saiyaara's dominance.

Released on Friday, the comedy sequel Son of Sardaar 2 starring Ajay Devgn, had a relatively low opening day. Sacnilk, an industry tracker, reports that the film's first-day earnings were around Rs 6.75 crore (India net). It also stars Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, and Deepak Dobriyal.

Day 1 box office receipts for the film came in at 22.56%. Shows in the morning started with a low occupancy rate of 10.24%, which rose to 17.88% in the afternoon, 21.84% in the evening, and a peak of 40.27% during night shows. Tier-2 cities, particularly Jaipur and Lucknow, have shown the most involvement, with 37% and 39% occupancy, respectively. Lower turnout was observed in metros such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, with respective figures of 30.50% and 20.25%.
While the numbers aren’t poor for a comedy sequel, the film’s performance falls short when compared to Devgn’s recent releases. Raid 2 which came out earlier this year, made Rs 19.25 crore in its first day of release. Shaitaan, a horror-thriller starring Devgn that came out a few months back, also earned Rs 14.75 crore on its premiere day. Even though it outperformed Kajol's Maa, which had an opening of Rs 4.5 crore, Son of Sardaar 2 lagged behind in terms of momentum.
Son of Sardaar 2 did better than Shazia Iqbal's Dhadak 2 which only made Rs. 3.35 crore on its opening day. But Mohit Suri's musical drama Saiyaara, which is in its second week and has earned Rs 285.75 crore so far, is giving both new movies a run for their money.
An important change is that Son of Sardaar 2 was originally supposed to come out a week earlier. Their decision to delay the release was based on the fact that Saiyaara is still doing very well at the box office. This strategy is very different from the one used in 2012, when the first Son of Sardaar debuted alongside Jab Tak Hai Jaan. At the time, the collections of both films were affected by the clash.
The future of Son of Sardaar 2 will become more apparent in the next days as to whether it will experience growth during the weekend or decline due to competition from Saiyaara and other planned releases.
