What is Chandrayaan

Chandrayaan is India's multi-mission lunar exploration programme by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), encompassing missions like Chandrayaan-1 (2008) which discovered water on the Moon, Chandrayaan-2 (2019) with its orbiter/lander/rover attempt, and the successful Chandrayaan-3 (2023) which achieved the first-ever soft landing near the moon's south pole, demonstrating new technologies for deep space missions.

Chandrayaan-1 (2008) is India's first lunar mission. It orbited the Moon and, with NASA's M3 instrument, provides the first conclusive evidence of water molecules on the Moon's surface, confirming traces of water ice.

Chandrayaan-2 (2019) is India's another ambitious mission featuring an orbiter, lander (Vikram), and rover (Pragyan), aiming for a soft landing, though the lander encountered issues.

And, finally, Chandrayaan-3 (2023) is the follow-up to Chandrayaan-2, which successfully soft-landed the Vikram lander and deployed the Pragyan rover near the lunar south pole, conducting internal scientific analysis and identifying it as a significant achievement for India.
