About Chandrayaan

Chandrayaan is India's multi-mission lunar exploration program by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). With Chandra meaning Moon and Yaan meaning vehicle, it aims to study the Moon's geology, chemistry, and water resources.

The program includes Chandrayaan-1 (2008), an orbiter that discovered water molecules; Chandrayaan-2 (2019), an orbiter/lander/rover mission with a soft-landing attempt; and Chandrayaan-3 (2023), which successfully soft-landed a rover near the moon's south pole, demonstrating advanced landing capabilities.

Chandrayaan-1 (2008)

Chandrayaan-1, launched by ISRO on October 22, 2008, was India's pioneering lunar mission. It was an orbiter that studied the Moon's surface, chemistry, and mineralogy using 11 international and Indian instruments, confirming the presence of water molecules on the lunar surface through its Moon Impact Probe (MIP) and clearing the way for future lunar exploration.

It was launched from Sriharikota, and it successfully entered a 100 km lunar orbit, making India a lunar-exploring nation. While the communication was lost in August 2009, it achieved all major objectives.

Chandrayaan-2 (2019)

Chandrayaan-2 was India's second lunar mission by ISRO, launched in 2019. It consisted of an orbiter, a Vikram lander, and a Pragyan rover, whose mission was to study the Moon's south polar region in detail, including its geology, minerals, and atmosphere. However, the lander lost contact during landing, although the powerful orbiter mapped the moon and collected valuable information about water ice and surface composition.

Although the lander (Vikram) lost contact just before landing in September 2019, the orbiter successfully entered lunar orbit and is still operational, building a foundation for future missions like Chandrayaan-3.

Chandrayaan-3 (2023)

Finally, Chandrayaan-3 was India's historic third lunar mission by ISRO. It successfully achieved the first-ever soft landing near the Moon's south pole on August 23, 2023, with its Vikram lander and Pragyan rover. It demonstrated India's capability to safely land, roam, and conduct in-situ scientific experiments on the lunar surface. This made India the fourth country to land on the Moon and the first to reach the South Pole region, studying its thermal properties, seismicity, plasma and elemental composition.

It confirmed the presence of elements like Sulfur, Aluminum, Calcium, Iron, and Oxygen, and measured unexpectedly high temperatures on the lunar surface. It also studied the plasma environment and seismic activity. Following the successful mission of Chandrayaan-3, several celebrities expressed joy.
