Actress Anarkali Marikar and Lukman Avaran’s latest movie Sulaikha Manzil dropped on a leading OTT platform on May 30. The movie, which is helmed by Bheemante Vazhi and Thamaasha director Ashraf Hamza, is touted to be a wedding entertainer set in Malabar.

The film, which had released in theatres in April as an Eid release, has an ensemble cast featuring Ganapathy, Shabareesh Varma, Chemban Vinod Jose, Adhri Joe, Deepa Thomas and Jolly Chirayath as part of the cast.

The movie revolves around a Malabar wedding with the bride-to-be, agreeing for an arranged marriage to satisfy the wishes of her family. However, things become tense as the D-day approaches with the soon-to-be-wed couple having second thoughts about the wedding. This predicament is made even more challenging for the two as they have to navigate the emotions of their family members, who are thick into the celebratory mode. What happens next form the plot of the movie.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Ashraf told us that he has a tendency to pick subjects closer to human emotions while making his movies and none surpasses that of a wedding – which is a smorgasbord to emotions and feelings.

“The movie’s story spans from the previous day of the wedding to till it’s over. A wedding is also an event that is pregnant with emotions – where you are welcoming people, letting go of those you love. The whole ‘blood, sweat and sacrifice’ aspect is there in every wedding, and the family audience can relate to such films easily,” said the filmmaker.

Ashraf also directed Lukman for the first time in the movie, despite having previously worked with him in Thallumaala, in which the filmmaker was the co-writer along with Muhsin Parari. Ashraf said that he had known the actor from his younger days and was waiting for the apt project to collaborate.

Sulaikha Manzil is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
