The horror comedy, which revolves around a haunted place in Kerala, managed to have a decent run at the cinemas. Sumathi Valavu final box office collection

The 2025 Malayalam film Sumathi Valavu released in theatres on August 1, opening its box office account with Rs 1.4 crore. Helmed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar, the film performed well in its first weekend with Sumathi Valavu registering Rs 2.4 crore on its day 3 at the box office. After that the earnings dropped, but Sumathi Valavu continued to run at the cinemas. The total worldwide collections of Sumathi Valavu is Rs 24.85 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk, which has also given a ‘hit’ verdict. The film also got a big shoutout from actor-producer Prithviraj Sukumaran, who congratulated the team for its ‘success’.

However, Arjun Ashohan’s horror comedy received mixed reviews upon its release, with some sections of the audience praising the humor while critics panned its cliche-filled storyline. Nevertheless, the film managed to impress with the song ‘Shokam Venda’ becoming a chart opener, and was a go-to track for social media reels during the festive season, second only to the 'Onam Mood' song from Sahasam.

What is the plot of Sumathi Valavu

The film centres on a place haunted by the spirit of a Tamil woman, named Sumathi, and hence gets the name. Arjun Ashokan plays Appu, who is troubled by the spirit. Based on a folktale, the film seeks to shed light on the mystery surrounding the haunted Sumathi Valavu.

Abhilash Pillai has penned the Vishnu Sasi Shankar directorial, which marks their second collaboration after the hit Malikappuram. Apart from Arjun Ashokan, Sumathi Valavu features Balu Varghese, Saiju Kurup, Sshivada, and Malavika Manoj, among others.

On the other hand, another Malayalam film, Hridayapoorvam starring Mohanlal, is also releasing on JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium on September 26.
