Suriya's Soorarai Pottru, directed by Sudha Kongara, wins big at Osaka International Film Festival

The film, which was Suriya and Aparna Balamurali in the lead, is based on the life of Captain GR Gopinath

Suriya's Soorarai Pottru, which is directed by Sudha Kongara, and has Aparna Balamurali, playing the leading lady, has won big at the Osaka International Film Festival. The film has won the awards for Best Film, Best Actor (Suriya), Best Music Director of the Year (GV Prakash Kumar), Best Director of the Year (Sudha Kongara), Best Production House of the Year (2D Entertainment) and Best Art Director of the Year (Jacki). The film is inspired by the life of Air Deccan founder Captain GR Gopinath.

The film's production house shared the details on its microblogging page, "#SooraraiPottru steals the limelight at #OsakaTamilInternationalFilmFestival Thank you @osaka_tamil International Film Festival for the honour! @Suriya_offl @Sudha_Kongara @gvprakash @rajsekarpandian @SonyMusicSouth @jacki_art (sic)."

While GV Prakash Kumar thanked the team for the opportunity, Jacki shared on his social page that he had also won the award for Vetri Maaran's Asuran, which had Dhanush playing the lead. Jacki wrote on his social media page, "Thanx for the opportunity @sudhakongara #SooraraiPottru @Suriya_offl @2D_ENTPVTLTD @nikethbommi.... #asuran @VetriMaaran @dhanushkraja @VelrajR and the consecutive recognition @osaka_tamil (sic)."

Soorarai Pottru was produced by Suriya and Guneet Monga. The star cast for the film included Paresh Rawal, Mohan Babu,Urvashi, Karunas, Krishnakumar, Vivek Prasanna, Kaali Venkat,Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, Prakash Belawadi, Dan Dhanoa, G Gnanasambandam to name a few. Cinematography was by Niketh Bommireddy and editing was handled by Sathish Surya. The film was released in Telugu as Aakasam Nee Haddu Raa, and the dubbed versions were released in Malayalam and Kannada.

Soorarai Pottru is now being remade in Hindi with Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan. Sudha Kongara will be directing the remake as well. Paresh Rawal is said to be reprising his role. Suriya had attended the launch ceremony of the Hindi remake and had wished the team. He had shared on his social media page, "A new begining… need all your love and blessings!! @akshaykumar @Sudha_Kongara @gvprakash @CaptGopinath @CapeOfGoodFilm @Abundantia_Ent @2D_ENTPVTLTD (sic)."
