Thalaivan Thalaivaii is the recent Tamil film to make its OTT debut this week. Headlined by actors Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, the film was touted to be a ‘rugged love story’ and explores the marital dynamics between a couple living in Madurai. As the film talks about the woes, discord, and troubles of married life, Thalaivan Thalaivii also makes a discomforting stance on the concept of divorce and separation, slightly leaning towards a regressive stance.

Thalaivan Thalaivii OTT release: How Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen film ends on a regressive note

Before its release, Thalaivan Thalaivii had gone all out to scream that it is a love story not about ‘normal people’. It isn’t a smooth one either, which makes one feel romance is as soft as rose petals. Instead, the Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen film had promised a decibel-high story of two people who fall in love and get married, only to resort to fighting and bickering, thanks to the constant interference from their family members in their lives.

Thalaivan Thalaivii is a story of Agasaveeran who may have seen his wife Perarasi through a matrimonial alliance, but gets married to her after falling in love with each other. But the constant interventions into their marital life by their respective family members, stop them from being in love and more at clashes, as shouting becomes their language of communication. Eventually, Perarasi leaves her husband with her to live with her family, and proceeds to conduct their child’s first tonsure ceremony without the presence of her husband. As Agasaveeran gatecrashes the function and created a ruckus, the film takes a non-linear method to tell the story of their lives.

Towards the climax, when Perarasi asks for a divorce from Agasaveeran gives a monologue about how people often split due to their ego and file for divorce, saying, “After they are divorced, they feel they have freedom and peace.” It is at this point the film takes a regressive stance on divorce and separation, a concept which is still considered taboo in India where there are plethora of cases revolving domestic abuse and dowry harassment. Even as the film wants to talk about the piousness of marital bliss, Thalaivan Thalaivii throws a dark shade on divorce which has only been liberating for a lot of people, especially women caught up in toxic marriages. A classic example follows when Perarasi gets a change of heart and runs behind her husband, and her who mother tries to stop her, gets a slap from her husband.

Moving on, the film attempts to balance when we see Perarasi and Agasaveeran at the court hall, obviously after yet another fight and separation. This time, standing in front of the judge, the film begins to take yet another lecture on anti-divorce. With the judiciary member, who needs to uphold progressiveness, saying that many think of divorce as ending, when granting the pair divorce, the film fails to recognise how the separation can ignite new beginnings for many individuals who experienced toxic and abusive marriages.

How does Thalaivan Thalaivii end?

In the post-credit scenes, we see the eatery of Agasaveeran running as usual, and as we expect him to be single once again, we spot Perarasi working alongside him. It is at this point that we come to know that after three months of getting divorced, Perarasi has a change of heart once again and chooses to live with her former husband, tearing the legal paperwork apart. But nothing has changed between them as Agasaveeran and Perarasi keep shouting on top of their lungs at each other, making them not ‘normal people’. By normalising the continuing non-cordiality of marriage, and that divorce is not an option for new beginnings and freedom, Thalaivan Thalaivii takes a regressive tone, especially at times when women are still at the cusp of gaining equality and independence in Indian society.
