Thamma maker Dinesh Vijan reveals upcoming slate in horror comedy universe

Eight films, including Thamma, will be in theatres over the next 5-6 years, says Dinesh Vijan

From Stree to Thamma and more

They’ve already had 4 very successful films – Stree, Bhediya, Munjya and Stree 2 – in theatres and the makers, Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, are from done with their horror comedy universe. Next up is the Ayushmann Khurrana-Rashmika Mandanna led Thamma, which hits theatres on October 21, 2024, amid the Diwali festivities. And after that, there will be 7 more films, all of which will come out in quick succession, says Dinesh.

In a promotional interview for Thamma with Galatta Plus, the filmmaker was quizzed about how long the horror comedy universe would last to which he said it would be 8 films, including Thamma. “After Thamma is a film called Shaktishaali, the announcement of which is in the movie. Then comes Chamunda, which will be the last character; now there are enough soldiers. Then comes Bhediya 2, Stree 3, which is the mothership and Munjya 2, after which we will do something called Mahayudh 1 and 2, and then a spin-off on Thamma,” he lists, adding that he is looking at having all these films in theatres in the next 5 years.

As for the potential comparisons between Thamma and Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra, since Rashmika Mandanna is rumoured to be playing a vampire, Dinesh adds that although he has not seen the Malayalam blockbuster, he’s been told it’s an exceptional film. “I think the world building that they’ve done is incredible. The difference is that the genesis story in Thamma is a little more in our mythology and has a lot of comedy. Like if vampires come to a family in Delhi, what are you going to serve them if you are vegetarian?” explains the filmmaker.
