It has been said before and it is being heard again – ‘Why does Rashmika Mandanna dub for herself in her Hindi films?’ That’s the question that audiences have raised after the release of Thamma, the latest instalment in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe. The actress has often been called out for her strong ‘south accent’ while speaking Hindi and yet dubbing for her Bollywood roles. It’s begun for Thamma too, with several viewers wondering why filmmakers continue to cast Rashmika without getting a dubbing artiste for her portions.

“Every time Rashmika speaks in a Hindi movie, it feels like it’s the Hindi dub of a South Indian movie”, wrote a user, while another added, “I don’t know why they take Rashmika without giving a Hindi dub for her dialogues. The outcry over Rashmika’s Hindi comes not long after Malayalis took umbrage over Janhvi Kapoor’s butchering of Malayalam in Param Sundari, which was widely noticed after the film dropped on OTT. Incidentally, Rashmika had addressed her lack of fluency in the language during the promotions of Sikander, stating that while she grew up speaking Kannada and English, on account of living in Hyderabad, she’s had to pick up Telugu too. She reckoned that she’d be a lot more comfortable speaking Hindi if she were to live in Mumbai for a while.

However, her Sikander co-star Salman came to her defence, adding that living in Mumbai would not help, because even her staff would be conversant in English. Thamma, meanwhile, has not opened to great reviews, with audiences calling it the weakest in the universe. Up next, Rashmika will be seen in the Telugu original film The Girlfriend, produced by Allu Arjun’s home banner and directed by Rahul Ravindran. The film releases across India on November 7 and will have a Hindi version too.
