According to The Guardian’s critical review, the movie failed to impress with no surprises but only creepy creatures and jump scares. “Wilson and Farmiga remain solidity incarnate, capable of enlivening even speculative spiritual dialogue. The film-making pulls no surprises out of the hat, though, and gives no indication that it would if it could. There’s another creepy doll, demonic makeup from the Linda Blair Fall ’73 range, and an ascent of a darkened staircase – but the floorboards have never seemed creakier. Last Rites has Howard Jones on the soundtrack and still feels obdurately Victorian,” a part of the review read.

According to Roger Ebert, Farmiga and Wilson delivered some extraordinary performances but the movie couldn’t stand out. “The extraordinary performances of Farmiga and Wilson have been the main show from the start, and the aspect that makes this franchise stand apart from so many others in the horror genre. This isn’t one of the all-time great “Conjuring” movies in terms of the supernatural elements—Ed and Lorraine don’t even set foot in this film’s haunted space until halfway through the story. The climax of “Last Rites” is as tense and unsettling as you want to be, but it’s also warm and inspiring, because unlike a lot of movies that sell the idea of families being stronger when they all work together, this one totally believes in it and sells it with all the skill and emotion it can muster,” a part of the review read.

A critical review by Hollywood reporter called the franchise farewell stale with lack of freshness. It says, “The Conjuring: Last Rites trades heavily in nostalgia, with numerous callbacks to past adventures and frequent visitations to the Warren’s “Artifact Room,” where Annabelle still resides in her locked cabinet. Farmiga and Wilson haven’t lost their appeal, and with their relaxed chemistry they make for engaging company. But it all feels old hat by now, with returning director Michael Chaves failing to bring much freshness or vitality to the proceedings.”

Meanwhile, The Conjuring: Last Rites revolves around the paranormal investigators, the Warrens, as they face a past demon while solving a haunting case in Pennsylvania (set in 1986). The younger version of Ed and Lorraine is portrayed by Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor.
