The trailer of The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen has come under fire after it claimed that around 32,000 young women joined the terrorist outfit, Islamic State. Many have alleged that the film has churned out a 'factory of lies' and that there is absolutely no proof to the claims. Some have also stated that it is an attempt to propagate hatred and destroy the religious harmony of the state.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had stated that the film is a product of the Sangh Parivar and that it is an attempt to spread their propaganda. He also stated that the movie is a deliberate attempt to create communal polarisation and the othering of Muslims. He called The Kerala Story, an attempt to destroy the image of peace-loving Kerala and humiliate the state in front of the world.

Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, too, shared the poster of the film and wrote on his social media handle, “Let me stress, I am not calling for a ban on the film. Freedom of expression does not cease to be valuable just because it can be misused. But Keralites have every right to say loud & clear that this is a misrepresentation of our reality. It may be your Kerala story. It is not our Kerala story (sic).”

Responding to the backlash, Adah Sharma, who plays the leading lady in the film, wrote on her social media handle, "Many seniors persons in high posts have commented on #TheKeralaStory after watching the 2 minute trailer . My parents have always asked me to respect my elders so with due respect to all of them i hope they can take 2 hrs out of their busy schedule and watch the movie. I'm sure they will see that we haven't shown Kerala in any derogatory light. Jai hind (sic)."

Many have expressed their anger against the trailer of The Kerala Story, which has been billed as a 'propaganda film' and have even called for a ban on the film in the state. In the meantime, the Kerala BJP has come out in support of the film. The Kerala Story is gearing up to hit screens on May 5.
