Tovino Thomas’ Thallumaala is all set to hit Netflix on September 11. The movie, which is directed by Khalid Rahman, has already become the Minnal Murali star’s highest-grossing theatrical release and its OTT release will only widen its reach, says the actor.

In a recent interview with OTTplay, Tovino talked about the criticism that a certain section of the audience had and how he believes the OTT release of the movie will make people who have already watched the film in theatres in August and September to rewatch and understand its nuances better.

Tovino addressed how a few people said that the Khalid Rahman directorial lacked a story. “The movie has a story or else people wouldn’t have cheered for Waseem and his friends in theatres as much as they did. The kind of reaction the climax sequences had is only because the audience could connect to the emotions of the characters and this despite the non-linear structure of the film,” said Tovino.

The actor also said that “lot of people said that Thallumaala will be criticised when it releases on OTT”. “I believe it will be watched even more and people would understand it even better in the second watch,” he said. “There are several nuances that are embedded in the film. This will become clearer when you watch the movie again – be it the different phases of Waseem or even minor aspects such as his friend Sattar’s ringtone.”

The movie, which hit theatres on August 12, is Tovino’s fourth theatrical release this year. While Naradhan, which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Vaashi and Dear Friend (both available on Netflix) failed to make a mark at the box office, Thallumaala is on its way to crossing Rs 50 crore at the box office – making it one of the highest grossing Malayalam movies this year.
