Cybertron, the planet where the Transformers originate, showcases the early history and friendship of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Transformers One shows how Optimus Prime and Megatron, who are now mortal foes, were once siblings and friends who altered Cybertron's destiny.
The plot, animation, script, voice acting, action scenes, score, and comedy of the film were all highly praised by critics. On a budget of $75–147 million, it earned $129.4 million globally, which was below expectations.
Played by Chris Hemsworth, Orion Pax/Optimus Prime is a miner and future Autobot commander who can change into a Cybertronian vehicle with red and blue paint. D-16/Megatron, played by Brian Tyree Henry, is a miner, future Decepticon leader, and former friend-turned-enemy of Orion who can convert into a silver Cybertronian tank. Keegan-Michael Key plays the role of B-127, a yellow Cybertronian car-transforming miner who becomes an Autobot scout. Eventually becoming the commander of the Autobots, Scarlett Johansson plays the role of Elita-1, a miner who turns into a pink Cybertronian motorcycle.
At its heart, Transformers One deals with the tragic relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron and their eventual breakup. Cooley felt compelled to prove that Megatron was more than a villain. He aimed for an audience not familiar with the Transformers series to be able to enjoy the picture without presuming anything about the protagonists or antagonists. When developing the arc, he drew ideas from numerous well-known stories of brothers-turned-enemies from all corners of popular culture. Megatron and Optimus Prime have vastly different beginnings, and the film initially featured a scene where he is shown as a gladiator, alluding to his earlier origin tale. Time restrictions led to their abandonment of that plan, and they were instead assigned to labour side by side in the mines.
Transformers One was Hemsworth's debut in an animated feature. He was captivated by the screenplay and decided to become a part of the production. For the role of Optimus Prime, Hemsworth tried very hard to avoid using his usual voice. With his charm and comedic timing, the actor brought many of the film's lines to life, which were actually "riff-offs" from the screenplay.
