Tron: Ares early reviews

Joachim Ronning’s Tron: Ares marks the third installment of the classic 1987 film Tron, featuring Jeff Bridges in the lead as a computer programmer who gets tangled in a virtual world with The Grid. Ahead of the movie’s theatrical premiere on October 10, Tron: Ares has sparked a mixed reaction with both praise and sharp criticism. Starring Jared Leto in the lead with a special cameo from Jeff Bridges in the second sequel, Tron: Ares garnered appreciation for its ‘spectacular design, swift pacing, and thoughtful script’ from the critic Roger Ebert. “The sum total is a rave of a movie that acts as its own hallucinogen, and that is best experienced on a huge screen with a state-of-the-art sound system. This is a stunning movie to watch and listen to, and unexpectedly rewarding to think about, considering that it always has one eye on the audience and is determined not to bore them,” shared Roger Ebert’s article. However, the review mentioned that the characters were ‘too archetypal or flat.’

Others called Tron: Ares a dull sequel with a loose plot and unconvincing performance from the lead protagonist. “Leto is unremittingly, unrelentingly awful here, although he isn’t helped by a limp plot point, which is supposed to allow him to show flashes of “empathy” for Greta Lee’s character and subcontract all the badass wickedness to Athena, thus making her marginally more interesting,” shared The Guardian in its negative review.

Variety praised the visual and sound effects in 3D but emphasized that the sci-fi sequel got weighed down by its nostalgia focus. “Tron: Ares” has too much nostalgia to service, from the cobwebby re-creation of Flynn’s arcade-basement office to Bridges’ extended cameo,” wrote Variety.

Many critics and reviews have given a big thumbs up to the impressive score of Nine Inch Nails' music score. “A refreshingly subdued performance from Jared Leto as the eponymous program, Ares, supplies an emotional hook and even an occasional touch of humor, something missing from the earlier films. Leto is also well-paired with Greta Lee as Eve Kim, CEO of ENCOM, the tech corporation at the center of the series since the start,” shared The Hollywood Reporter’s review.
