A film facing a stay right before it is slated to release in theatres is not unheard of, as is the case for Udaipur Files. Vijay Raaz's film, which was scheduled to release on July 11, has been in legal trouble after several petitions were filed to stay its release. The film is based on the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal.

About the buzz of Udaipur Files

The release of the film Udaipur Files, starring Vijay Raaz, has been facing a stay order as a plea argued that its release could affect the ongoing trial in the Udaipur murder case. In particular, the petition argues that showing the accused as guilty in a film before the trial is over could unfairly influence public opinion and affect the fairness of the trial.

What's the current status of Udaipur Files

On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the Delhi High Court ordered the producers of the film to arrange an emergency screening of the film for all the lawyers appearing in the case.

A division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal directed the lawyers representing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the petitioners to watch the movie and come to the court again on Thursday with their perspectives.

A petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani has demanded a ban on the movie, saying it disrespects the Prophet Muhammad and insults Muslims.

Meanwhile, the CBFC, represented by additional solicitor general (ASG) Chetan Sharma, told the bench that the board had proposed some cuts before granting certification to the film, which was scheduled to release on Friday, but has been affected.

“We’ve addressed all the issues as has been raised in the petition. These are the offending portions, references and dialogues, they have all been taken down by the central board. Anything which could have been offensive has been taken down,” Sharma submitted.

However, the film's producer claims that the cuts have also been implemented as per the CBFC's suggestions.

“Before we make a decision (to go for screening or not), we’re requesting you to go through those cuts and come before us tomorrow. The film needs to be viewed by you,” the court said to Madani’s counsel, Kapil Sibal.

An accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case also approached the Supreme Court challenging the screening of the film. Mohammad Jawed demanded an urgent hearing of the case, saying that the release of the film would prejudice the trial of the case.

Udaipur Files stars Vijay Raaz Rajneesh Duggal, Preeti Jhangiani, Kamlesh Sawant, Kanchi Singh, and Mushtaq Khan.

Meanwhile, Udaipur Files, which was scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, has been put on hold. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates on this.
