Vellaripattanam: Manju Warrier, Soubin Shahir’s satire gets a release date in March

Vellaripattanam, which is helmed by Mahesh Vettiyar, has Manju Warrier and Soubin Shahir as leads

Malayalam superstar Manju Warrier is gearing up for her third release this year, with debutant filmmaker Mahesh Vettiyar’s satire Vellaripattanam. The makers of the movie, which also has Soubin Shahir in the lead, announced its release date on Monday.

The film, which went on floors after the pandemic lockdown, is touted to be an entertainer that has both Soubin and Manju’s characters at each other’s throats. Shot in and around Alappuzha, the movie marks Mahesh’s first feature film, though he had earlier co-directed the animated movie Swami Ayyappan in 2012.

In an earlier interview with Kochi Times, Mahesh had said that Vellaripattanam, which was previously titled Vellarikapattanam, is a family entertainer that is laced with humour. “It’s also a social satire set in the current era,” he said. The film is scripted by Mahesh and Sarath Krishna.

The team has released several hilarious teasers from the film the past few months, which also explore the animosity between its two leads. Apart from Manju and Soubin, Vellaripattanam also has Krishna Sankar, Salim Kumar, Suresh Krishna, Kottayam Ramesh and Sabareesh Varma in pivotal roles.

The film, which has Alex J Pulickal as its cinematographer and Sachin Shankor Mannath as its composer, is set to hit theatres on March 24. Manju’s previous releases this year was Ayisha and Ajith’s Thunivu, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

In a recent interview with us, the actress, who is also part of Madhavan’s Amriki Pandit, said that she is game for all types of films. Thunivu saw her playing an action-oriented role for the first time in her career and the actress was lauded for the portrayal. “It all depends on how convincingly it will be made for the screen. I am open to all kinds of films,” said the actress, whose Ayisha was also released in Arabic this year.
