Tentatively titled Thalapathy 68, the next movie of Tamil superstar Vijay has sparked numerous speculations. Vijay has reportedly considered scripts from his regular collaborators as well as from new directors who haven't worked with him before.

There have been talks about Telugu filmmaker Gopichand Malineni and Tamil director Karthik Subbaraj being in contention to direct Vijay's upcoming film. However, it appears that the superstar has made a decision regarding the director.

According to the latest buzz, filmmaker Venkat Prabhu has successfully secured Vijay's dates, and the shooting for the movie is expected to commence in early 2023. An official confirmation is still awaited.

For a while, Gopichand seemed to be the frontrunner for directing Vijay's next film, even visiting Chennai to finalise the project.

Thalapathy 68 is reported to be produced by Super Good Films, a production house known for backing some of Vijay's biggest blockbusters, including Gilli and Jilla.

The official announcement of this project might take some time as Vijay is currently occupied with shooting for his upcoming film, Leo. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Leo went on floors earlier this year and is being fast-tracked for an October release. Following the completion of Leo, Vijay will move on to his next movie.

Given the need to maintain focus on promoting Leo, it is reasonable to assume that the filmmakers won't disclose details about Vijay's next movie until later this year.

Recently, Venkat Prabhu's latest directorial venture, Custody, was released in theatres. This Tamil-Telugu bilingual film generated high expectations but received negative reviews. The opening weekend box office collections were also below expectations. Custody stars Naga Chaitanya and Krithi Shetty.
