At a recent media interaction on the occasion of her 15-year anniversary in films, Ragini had said that she did not like the role that was offered to her in The Devil

After 15 years in the film industry, Ragini Dwivedi is clearly on the lookout for meatier roles that are not just about onscreen glamour. “After a certain age, you can’t do the same kind of roles,” she had said in recent media interactions. In fact, in her upcoming release Vrusshabha, the actress is paired with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, in a story set across two time periods. But that apart, the role also means that she is playing mother to an adult son, played by Samarjit Lankesh, in the Nandakishore directorial.

Vrusshabha will be in theatres on December 25, but ahead of it, Ragini has managed to literally stir up a hornets’ nest, when she said that she was approached for a role in Challenging Star Darshan’s most recent release The Devil and that she had rejected her. More than the rejection, it’s what she said along with it is what has irked Darshan fans. Ragini said that when she was approached for the role and given a narration, she “did not like it” and felt that she didn’t need it on her filmography.
Social media has been flooded with the video clipping of Ragini’s statement, with the comment section filled with ageist comments, body shaming and much more, with many also dredging up her arrest and brief incarceration in a drugs scandal, a case in which she was cleared of all charges though.
The role in question was eventually played by Sharmiela Mandre, who’d spoken at length about her scenes being “powerful”. However, in the final edit, these bits were far from impactful, with the actress as a politician, subjected to rape by the ‘The Devil’ character Dhanush (played by Darshan) and her then trying to leverage that for a better position within the party, in exchange for her silence. What she gets is a bullet in the head and that’s the end of her role in the Prakash Veer directorial.
