Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has a Christmas release – Vrusshabha. The film, directed by Kannada filmmaker Nandakishore (of Pogaru fame), had sparked some interest based on the visuals in the teaser and trailer, but netizens reckon that not enough is being done to promote the film. Earlier today, a new song from the film, a romantic number called Penne Penne, featuring Samarjit Lankesh, who plays Mohanlal’s son in the film, and Nayan Sarika dropped.

Is no one waiting for Vrusshabha?

Hours later, the Sam CS composition, sung by Kapil Kapilan, had barely notched up a few thousand views, with some of those who did tune in saying that Penne Penne looked and sounded a lot like RDX’s Neela Nilave. No prizes for guessing who composed and sang that song. The lack of reach of the song was because the team was not promoting the film enough, they felt. “It’s like no one is waiting for this film,” wrote one user, while another added, “This movie will be an addition to troll Mohanlal's recent filmography”.

Mohanlal had attended Vrusshabha’s recent trailer launch, but the promotions since then have been spearheaded by Ragini Dwivedi, Samarjit and Nayan, which has not made much of a dent. While Ragini has done a couple of Malayalam films earlier, Samarjit is only one film old in Kannada, while Nayan is an upcoming Telugu actress. Hardcore Mohanlal fans remain hopeful that on release day, audiences will line up at the theatres, irrespective of whether they’ve been enticed by anything about the film.

After the trailer came out, several netizens pointed out that the film needed a different set of more popular actors along with Mohanlal, which was the initial plan. The Malayalam-Telugu bilingual was meant to star Pelli SandaD’s Roshan Meka and mark Shanaya Kapoor’s south film debut. However, after the first schedule, there were unspecified issues and the cast changed, during which time, it was rumoured that the project had been shelved. Interestingly, Roshan has a Christmas release in Telugu called Champion.
