Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns to solve the murder of Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, who was a controversial priest of a gothic church community in a remote place in upstate New York. Jefferson is found stabbed to death during the Good Friday preparations in the church. The murder appears to be an 'impossible' crime, as the room has no other access points.
The story mainly unfolds from the perspective of Father Jud Duplenticy (Josh O'Connor), a young priest who was recently assigned to assist Wicks. Jud instantly becomes the primary suspect, and he joins hands with Blanc in solving the case and clearing his name.
A large number of Jefferson Wicks' devotees are also on the suspect list of Benoit Blanc. Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), who was the priest's right-hand woman, alcoholic Dr Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), author Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), lawyer Vera Draven (Kerry Washington), former cellist Simone Vivane (Cailee Spaeny), and groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church).
As the story focuses on the church and priests in a remote area, it's pretty clear that Wake Up Dead Man explores themes of religion and personal faith. This provides a darker and more gothic tone than previous Knives Out flicks.
In a chat with Variety in October, director Rian Johnson expressed his desire to make more Knives Out movies, despite his contract ending with Netflix with Wake Up Dead Man. He showed much interest to keep going on with the murder-solving escapades with his detective Benoit Blanc.
During a talk at the BFI London Film Festival, Rian Johnson revealed that he doesn't feel burnt out at all, instead, he feels more energised after Wake Up Dead Man. So as long as fans want to keep seeing it and Daniel, he would love to keep making murder mysteries as the duo believes they can come up with stuff that feels pretty challenging.
Although Rian Johnson didn't officially confirm much about further Knives Out franchise films, his interest gives a flicker of hope, we must say!
