Sujan Dasgupta – writer of Bengali sleuth Ekendra Sen, aka Eken Babu, passed away on Wednesday morning. He was 76. His body was discovered by his house help in the morning. As per sources, his wife went to Shantiniketan for a short trip. He was alone in the house. Survey Park Police have taken over the charge and his body was sent for a postmortem in the afternoon.

Anirban Chakrabarti, who immortalised Eken Babu on screen, is in deep shock. “This is a bolt out of the blue. I spoke to him just a couple of days ago and he was absolutely ok. He invited the Eken Babu team – Joydeep (Mukherjee, director), Padmanava (Dasgupta, scriptwriter), and me – to lunch at his house on coming Tuesday. He said that his wife will also get back by then. He sounded absolutely ok. And today morning, I got a call from the media who informed me about his demise. I am shocked. I don’t know what to say,” he said.

Sujan Dasgupta, who lived in the US, came to India in November with his wife. In December, he was seen at different events during the release of the sixth season of Eken Babu at Hoichjoi. The sixth volume of his Eken Babu collection was scheduled to get launched at this year’s Kolkata Book Fair. he was briefly taken ill and was admitted to hospital as he suffered from UTI. However, as per his friends and family members, he recovered and was keeping well.

Joydeep, who directed the fourth and sixth seasons o and two films (The Eken and one yet to be released) f Eken Babu, said, “While he aged, he seemed a healthy and fit man. We spoke just recently and we were scheduled to meet on Tuesday. I used to tell him to continue with his Eken Babu adventure and he used to joke that it is the show that made his books more popular. He also trusted Padmanava and me with Eken Babu. I am deeply shocked after I got the news from Padmanabha.”
