Mental health issues are considered to be a taboo topic in society even in this day and age. Being the glamorous industry it is, many would not expect Bollywood to be candid about mental illnesses. But the new generation of celebrities seems to be breaking away from the taboos associated with depression and have openly talked about their experiences in their interviews. Deepika Padukone

Deepika was one of the first celebrities to openly talk about mental health. The actress in an interview shared how she suffered from depression during the shoot of her film Happy New Year. Since then she has been trying to raise awareness regarding the issue and sensitize those who are in need of proper health facilities. She even founded a Mental Health Foundation in 2015 which combines knowledge and expertise to create awareness.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka has also been very pretty vocal about her views on the issue. She once shared a quote titled Depression, which said, “Depression is a prison where you are both the suffering prisoner and the cruel jailer.” She even revealed how she wants to erase all the shame attached to the issue.

Varun Dhawan

Varun revealed that he was once in a dark state while shooting for his film Badlapur. The dark character of a psycho took a mental toll on him and the actor fell into the ramifications of it. Though he said that he does not want to use the word "depression" loosely but had a little experience of his own with the issue.

Shah Rukh once stated that during his shoulder surgery in 2010, the actor was in a lot of pain and had to fight his dreaded mental health condition. The superstar was quoted as saying, “Due to the shoulder injury, and the suffering, I had got into a depression mode, but now I am out of it. I feel happy and boosted with energy.”,

Shaheen Bhatt

Alia Bhatt's sister and Mahesh Bhatt's daughter Shaheen have had their own struggles with mental health. She took to Instagram and penned down a heartfelt note describing how she has been dealing with mental issues since the age of thirteen. She shared, “One minute everything's fine and the next it's like someone turned the light off inside my head. I go quiet and it's difficult to get out of bed. Like it always does, the world around me loses focus and I struggle to make sense of it. Sometimes these bouts last an hour - sometimes they last days....” She later published a book of her own talking about the same issue.
