Rangasthalam (2018)

Although Rangasthalam and Kantara are fairly distinct from one another in terms of the storyline, the two films do boast of stark similarities in tone and how the old-school 'masala' tropes are employed to great effect. Just as in Rishab Shetty's film, the Telugu blockbuster too features a period village setting and centres on the protagonist's rise to the defence of his people against evil. Rangasthalam is a coming-of-age tale by all means and director Sukumar's astute eye for the world he creates helped Ram Charan elevate his performance as the film's leading man. Ably supported by Samantha, Jagapathi Babu, Aadhi, and others, the RRR actor delivered a career-defining performance. The film is currently available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.

Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020)

The 2020 Malayalam film won a lot of praise for the smart navigation of a narrative involving complex ideas such as patriarchy, the associated egotistical behaviour, and social hierarchy. Two men, separated by the thin line of the law, come at loggerheads over a seemingly petty issue and push their individual egos to the limit. Firmly placed in the commercial space, Ayyapanum Koshiyum is buoyed up by the central performances of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Biju Menon with Sachy's skilful work as the director too drawing praise. Ayyappanum Koshiyum is currently available on Amazon Prime Video.

Karnan (2021)

Mari Selvaraj's 2021 film is a poignant take on the social injustices experienced by marginalized castes in rural India. Tamil actor Dhanush sheds his superstar image to perfectly embody the inner rage experienced by the oppressed sections of society and though Kantara isn't as intense a study as Karnan is, both films are considerably similar in how an entire community comes together to counter injustice. Karnan can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana (2021)

Raj B. Shetty's 2021 film explored the depth of human greed and loyalty using modern-day Mangaluru's gritty crime world as the backdrop. Raj also features as one of the film's main leads along with Rishab Shetty and the duo's uncanny energy together as childhood friends who grow up to be gangsters is one of the main reasons why this film works. If you love crime dramas like Subramaniapuram Gangs of Wasseypur, and Angamaly Diaries then Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana is likely to be up your alley. You can stream the film on Zee5.

Tumbbad (2018)

Rahi Anil Barve's beguiling drama fuses elements of pulp mythology, crime and horror to explore human extremities. The film is also a visual masterpiece rendered by cinematographer Pankaj Kumar and many regarded the film's technical merits as 'game-changing' for Indian cinema, adding that Tumbbad will go down in history as a one-of-a-kind fantasy adventure. The film is currently available on Amazon Prime Video.
