This has compelled filmmakers to often incorporate Kashmir into their narratives, for both its visual aesthetic and the unique stories Kashmir has to offer. So here is a list of films where the state is used as a narrative tool, akin to a character, in popular films.

Notebook

The 2019 film produced by Salman Khan is a romantic drama set in Kashmir. The film stars Zaheer Iqbal as Kabir Kaul and Pranutan Bahl as Firdaus Quadri in lead roles. Directed by Nitin Kakkar the film tells the tale of Kabir, a former army officer, who returns to teach at his father's school to help save it from closure. He soon falls in love with a former teacher who had left behind memorabilia in her old classroom. The film was praised for its cinematography and performance by the cast.

Mission Kashmir

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s action thriller is one of the most critically acclaimed films on this list. The film features a star-studded ensemble of Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Jackie Shroff. The story follows Roshan’s character, Altaaf Khan, who joins a militant group in search of revenge after he discovers that the person responsible for his family’s death was none other than his guardian, the police chief, whose role is essayed by Sanjay Dutt. The film is a social commentary on war and how it impacts children and survivors.

Roja

Roja is widely regarded as one of the most popular films from the Tamil industry. It is also the film that propelled A R Rahman to stardom with some of the most iconic soundtracks ever created for any film. Directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, the film stars Arvind Swami and Madhoo in lead roles. The story follows Madhoo’s character in search of her husband, kidnapped by militants in Kashmir. The multiple National Award-winning film remains a classic and has been dubbed in several regional languages.

Fanaa

The 2006 film, Fanaa, is a romantic thriller starring Aamir Khan and Kajol in lead roles. Directed by Kunal Kohli, parts of the film are inspired by Ken Follet’s novel, Eye of the Needle, which was also made into a British film in 1981 starring Donald Sutherland. Fanaa tells the story of a blind Kashmiri woman played by Kajol who unwittingly falls in love with a militant insurgent played by Aamir Khan.

Hamid

Rasika Dugal, Vikas Kumar, and Talha Arshad Reshi play the lead roles in Hamid. The film tells the story of a young boy named Hamid who believes that he has found God’s phone number. In an attempt to reach his missing father through God, Hamid dials the number, only to be connected to a soldier trying to find amidst all the chaos. The film won several awards including a National Award and is directed by Aijaz Khan.

Haider

Loosely based on Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, the film Haider, tells the story of the conflict in Kashmir following the insurgency in 1995. This riveting crime drama thriller stars Shahid Kapoor and Tabu in the lead roles with Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, and Irrfan Khan in supporting roles. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film won several awards including five National Film Awards.
