List hai toh hit hai

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s latest film is the crime drama Monster. The veteran’s new potential blockbuster is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar. So for today’s List hai toh hit hai podcast we take a look at some of his best films available to stream in India.

Sadayam (SunNXT)

Malayalam director Sibi Malayil has not always had the best track record when it comes to impressing critics with his blockbusters in recent years, but his 1992 psychological drama Sadayam is one of the finest films ever made in the Malayalam film industry. Mohanlal essays the role of an artist who is on death row for killing two young girls. He shows no remorse or guilt and oddly enough willingly confessed to his heinous crimes. The film’s tragic yet thought-provoking narrative, National Award-winning screenplay by M T Vasudevan Nair, and grief-inducing sound design by Johnson make it a compelling watch.

Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal (Disney+ Hotstar)

Legendary filmmaker and writer, Padmarajan, was ahead of his time with the themes and stories he used in his films. And Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal is a masterpiece that ticks all the right boxes when it comes to excellence in cinema. The film’s central narrative is a love story, but its underlying subtext is about how sexual assault survivors are perceived by society. Released in the 80s, the film’s themes were alien to the industry and were not recognised nor acknowledged in any subsequent Malayalam film for decades.

Thoovanathumbikal (Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video)

Another Padmarajan and Mohanlal collaboration makes its way into this list, and it’s the 1987 cult classic Thoovanathumbikal. The film tells the story of a man leading duals and falling in love with two different women. The film is a satire on the 90s society in Kerala and it explores themes of love and lust. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest Indian films of all time.

Guru (YouTube)

The 1997 film Guru is easily one of the most underrated Mohanlal films. The film tells the story of an extremist, played by Mohanlal, who is mysteriously taken to another realm where the people are blind and the very idea of sight is deemed blasphemous by the King and the elders. He lives among them and gains a new perspective on life and society, and he also uncovers a dark secret about what causes blindness for the local community. The film was the first Malayalam film selected as India’s entry for the Oscars.

Thanmathra (Disney+ Hotstar)

Based on Padmarajan’s short story Orma, the 2005 Malayalam film stars Mohanlal in the lead as a man who starts to show early signs of Alzheimer's disease. Directed by Blessy, the film won a whopping five Kerala State Awards including Best Actor, Best Film, and Best Director. It remains to be one of Mohanlal's best performances.

Nadodikkattu (YouTube)

One of the films that propelled Mohanlal to mainstream stardom is the 1987 comedy-drama Nadodikkattu. Directed by Sathyan Anthikad, the plot revolves around two men named Vijayan and Dasan, played by Mohanlal and Srinivasan, who decide to illegally migrate to Dubai on a boat, after losing their jobs back home. However, they are conned and end up in Madras instead, and inexplicably get mixed in the crosshairs of a drug deal. The film satirizes the 90s socio-economics in Kerala and it remains to be one of the best Malayalam comedies of all time.
