The Dark Comedy genre has claimed its position in the Western movie market since the 1970s but Indian Cinemas took its own time, yet came with a bang. Though it focuses on concepts generally considered taboo, painful to discuss or sensitive content, it has been widely acclaimed provoking filmmakers to produce some amazing storylines.

Ee. Ma .Yau

Ee. Ma .Yau is a contracted title for Esho Mariyam Yeuseppu, a 2018 Malayalam dark comedy movie that stars Chemban Vinod Jose, Kainakary Thankaraj and Vinayakan in lead roles. A dark noir movie that took humor to a zenith has undoubtedly received many prestigious accolades for Best Direction and Best Acting by Chemban. The movie set in Chellanam village in Kerala revolves around the story of an old man Vavachan Mesthiri’s death. Prior to his death, Vavachan is promised by his son Eesi that his post-death procession and funeral will be as vibrant as that of a King. The rest of the story tells whether he will keep his promise or not.

A 2019 Tamil quirky dramedy movie that stars Vijay Sethupathi, Fahad Faasil, Samantha and Ramya Krishna in lead roles. A 2018 Hindi dark humor movie starring Late Irrfan Khan, Kirti Kulhari and Arunoday Singh in lead roles. The movie depicts the unexciting life of a middle-class man named Dev Kaushal in his late 30s who finds out his wife Reena is cheating on him. Enraged Dev chalks out a secret mission to blackmail her and her boyfriend Ranjit. Not a spoiler here, but the climax displays a series of twists which is the main highlight of the movie and worth watching!

Andhadhun is a 2018 Hindi dark comedy thriller movie. The movie stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu and Radhika Apte in lead roles. The plot follows the story of Akash, a piano player who pretends to be visually impaired to make quick money gets unexpectedly involved in witnessing a murder entangling him into a series of problems putting his life into a threat. The movie’s screenplay and nail-biting twists have been a cakewalk for claiming many prestigious awards.
