The winner of the Miss World 1994 pageant, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan started her acting career in Mani Ratnam's 1997 Tamil film Iruvar and made her Hindi film debut in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya that same year. Her first commercial success was the film Jeans in 1998. She achieved wider success and won two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for her performances in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romantic dramas Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Devdas (2002).

Rai is the first Indian actress to be on the jury of the Cannes International Film Festival and has appeared on several shows including ones with David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey.
