Arjun Chakravarthy Review

Arjun Chakravarthy has been written and directed by Vikrant Rudra and is a sports drama about a Kabaddi player. The film is set in the late 80s and showcases how sports were considered a taboo and not many took them seriously in Andhra Pradesh. Vikrant sets the story in such a way that the hero himself is the villain in the film, and this has been elevated nicely in the setup.

Not many knew that the film is based on real-life incidents and has been fictionalised a bit, which makes things interesting. The best part of the film is the scenes where the sport of Kabaddi was slowly but steadily recognised and how the players faced problems in taking part in competitions.

This aspect is interlaced with the story of an orphan who goes all out in life and reaches the top, only to fail in his personal life. All this has been showcased in a very interesting manner in the first half of the film. Yet another asset of the film is the love track between the lead pair. The manner in which it is showcased in a realistic note impresses one and all. The chemistry between the lead pair and the innocence they generate is neatly showcased.

Having said this, the film also has a few demerits. Sports dramas mostly follow similar storylines, and the same is the case with Arjun Chakravarthy as well. The manner in which he loses focus on his game and gets addicted to alcohol has been showcased in many films earlier. But the best part is that this does not last long.

Sports drama to stream on OTTplay

On the other hand, Kabaddi is a team game, and how the hero dominates the show looks a bit over the top in a few scenes. So, all those who expect major twists and turns in terms of the story might be disappointed.

Coming to the performances, Vijay Rama Raju lives and breathes the role of Arjun Chakravarthy. At such a young age, he gets to play a character that allows him to portray varied emotions. The best part is where he goes through a physical transformation. This aspect has been showcased impressively by the director, and Rama Raju excels with his performance. The scenes where he realizes his mistakes, his longing for love, and the intensity in his eyes while playing the game have been showcased quite well by the young actor.

Sija Rose plays the female lead, and she looks quite natural. She, too, gives a balanced performance and suits her role perfectly. Sija was especially good in all the emotional scenes. Seasoned actor Ajay gets a good role and excels in it. Dayanand Reddy, who plays the hero's mentor, was also good in his role. The performances in Arjun Chakravarthy are strong and take the film forward.

As Arjun Chakravarthy is a period drama, the production design is top-notch, especially the bygone era and the way it has been designed. The dialogues and the accent used to depict the bygone era have been executed quite well. The editing in the first half could have been a lot better. But there are enough emotions in the film to make you forget the routine storyline.

Arjun Chakravarthy verdict

On the whole, Arjun Chakravarthy is a honest attempt at making sports dramas which is rare in Telugu cinema. Despite having a predictable premise, the heartfelt performances, solid emotions, and coming-of-age drama make this film a decent watch this festive weekend.
