There have been numerous films and series based on female ambition and their journey to success in a male-dominated world. It's not a new topic, but it never goes out of style. It's the mastery of a filmmaker in how you uniquely portray the subject. Just like that, Karan Johar's Do You Wanna Partner also follows the same topic, but to portray it, the series narrates a refreshing plot.
The series is the journey of two best friends Shikha (Tamannaah Bhatia) and Anahita (Diana Penty), who decide to launch their own craft beer brand, 'Jugaaru.' While Shikha was laid off from her company, Anahita left her job due to discrimination at her workplace. After a lot of discussion and 'ifs and buts', the two best friends open their craft beer brand. While Shikha knows beer because her late father used to make beer, Anahita knows the financial section. But once they step into the world of craft beer, they realize the hurdle of opening a business because nobody is ready to listen to women's ideas in this male-dominated society. But they never give up. You open a business, and you don't have an enemy? This is impossible. Jugaaru has the biggest enemy in the market, and that is Silver Tusk, a beer company by Vikram Walia (Neeraj Kobi), who was a business partner of Shikha's father, but he betrayed the latter.
They go to every place to find a sponsor, but nobody is up for it unless they have a 'good connection.' The two best friends meet Bobby, a brewer. With the help of Anahita and Shikha, Bobby unlocks the unique recipe of the beer Shikha's dad used to make, which includes Gondhoraj lebu (Sandalwood lemon) and Kanakchur rice, famous in Kolkata. Even though they have the best beer recipe, they fail to present it to the sponsors.
They face traumas, depression, dilemmas, and a lot of issues, until they meet an artist who can play any role. Jaaved Jaaferi as Dylan truly proves why he is one of a kind. He plays the role of David Jones, a popular face in the market, who becomes the face of their craft beer company, Jugaaru. Their unique style of advertisement goes viral on social media, and people become crazy to meet David. They also love the logo of the craft beer, designed by Anahita's brother (Sufi Motiwala). Once the company starts earning some fame, Shikha, Anahita, and Bobby set up a meeting with Laila (Shweta Tripathi), who has all kinds of power and can help them start the business flawlessly. Laila meets David and agrees to do business with them.
To open a business means facing a lot of professional and personal struggles. Likewise, Shikha faces a breakup with her boyfriend, arguments with her best friend Anahita, and more. To be honest, although the breakup scene is unnecessary, Karan Johar makes sure to show it as real as possible. At one time, Shikha loses everyone due to her overconfidence, ego, and impulsiveness. Meanwhile, Anahita, who is right on her point, stays focused on not going back to Jugaaru. But at the end, with the help of David/Dylan, the two best friends again reunite and face the challenges, and save their Jugaaru from Vikram Walia's Silver Trust.
Do You Wanna Partner has a lot of unnecessary scenes. The series could have ended with 5 episodes, but it continued till the 8th. From the 6th episode, the plot feels dragged, too much drama, and never-ending arguments, which makes the series a bit boring. When Jugaaru finally finds time to take a breath, Shikha gets a call from Vikram Walia, hinting at a second season of Do You Wanna Partner.
Speaking about the performances, Tamannaah and Diana are impressive, but could have been more dedicated. Their expression are on point, but with the 'dragged' plot, it looks a bit off. On the other hand, Nakuul Mehta looks promising, while Sufi Motiwala slays with his own style. I've been wanting Sufi to star in a show or a movie since The Traitors India because the way he talks, is simply amazing. His debut show is the proof he has a long way to go. Meanwhile, Jaaved and Shweta, the seasoned actors, prove their acting talent once again.
Tamannaah Bhatia and Diana Penty's Do You Wanna Partner series captures the highs, lows, and beautiful mess of building something from scratch as the two best friends start a craft beer business. However, the dragged plot ruins the mood from the 6th episode, making you want to pray it ends soon with a 'happy ending.'
