Drishyam 2 review: Maintains essence of the original

Drishyam 2

Many filmmakers choose to cash in on their old glories by investing their efforts in a sequel. However Drishyam is one franchise that surpasses all fears and manages to stun you every single time.

Director and writer Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal have done it again. They have managed to make Drishyam 2 as much as, if not more, intriguing than the original.

It is the story of a man who has pledged to protect his family at all cost, but will it be at the cost of his own life? That is a question Drishyam 2 answers tactically.

This time around, the audiences, along with Georgekutty (played by Mohanlal) and his family, have their stomach constantly churning at the thought of 'what will happen next'. Drishyam 2 also provides a lot more closure than Drishyam, but in a way that doesn't leave the audience disappointed.

Right from the teaser, Mohanlal's eyes have done all the talking. That happens to be the case with the whole film too. The Malayalam actor's eyes speak a lot louder than words. In fact, his character Georgekutty too is a man of few words, which allows Mohanlal to internalise the character with conviction.

Although the film is all about Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Asha Sarath and Siddique are just as compelling in their roles.

What kept me hooked, were the moments leading to the ultimate truth.

Joseph also deserves accolades for addressing the topic of sexual harassment through the film. As mentioned earlier, Drishyam 2 provides closure, unlike Drishyam which was left to interpretation.

With Drishyam 2, everybody knows the truth but like everything, even the truth can be manipulated. Joseph's ideology and Mohanlal's execution of the character are in perfect sync, which makes Drishyam 2 an interesting watch.

Although what should happen to the lead is left to personal judgement, the reality is out in the open, and that is what makes Jeetu Joseph's Drishyam 2 so beautiful.

The cinematography, music and lighting also play a crucial role in Drishyam 2 and there isn't anything that I could complain about when it comes to the technical aspects.

Verdict: In all, Drishyam 2 is just like the original at the core, but it is so much more. The film is definitely a recommended watch.
