Gurram Paapi Reddy is a crime comedy directed by Murali Manohar, who has penned a story with a large scope for comedy. The young director starts the film on an impressive note and keeps the proceedings quite light in the first twenty minutes.
The manner in which the episodes involving the dead body exchange are showcased is hilarious. All the comedy episodes featuring Jeevan have been designed quite well, and the seasoned actor evokes good fun in the proceedings. His chemistry and fun scenes with Rajkumar Kasireddy are also top-notch.
Yogi Babu also plays a key role, and his scenes related to cremation have worked well. On the flip side, the director drags the film for no reason and takes time to get to the main plot. He establishes the characters well, and the thrills and comedy that come in at the beginning are very good.
But after that, there are many padded scenes that drag the film unnecessarily. As the focus is too much on comedy, the emotions take a backseat. The film is filled with a few over-the-top comedy scenes that should have been reduced in the latter half.
Yet another disappointing aspect of the film is the storyline, which we have seen in multiple films to date. Also, there are way too many songs in the narrative. They have been placed in such a manner that the flow of the film is disturbed.
One gets a feeling that there was no need for songs in the film in the first place. Just to make things commercial, many aspects have been added, and this makes the film boring in several areas.
Despite having seasoned comedians like Yogi Babu and Brahmanandam, one gets a feeling that they are underutilized in the setup.
The screenplay is penned in a very convenient manner. There are scenes that show how the gang would carry out such a heist in the first place, but when the time comes, things look too simple. The logic goes for a toss in a few areas.
Coming to the performances, Naresh Agastya of Vikkatakavi fame has done a great job in his role. He is quite active and carries the film on his shoulders.
Faria Abdullah is neat in her supporting role and looks gorgeous. Jeevan Reddy plays a key role and is one of the highlights of the film. John Vijay is irritating in his role and bores the audience. Yogi Babu is okay, and so is Brahmanandam. The rest of the characters are decent in the setup.
The background score is impressive, but the songs are a disturbance. The dialogues are funny, and the production design is good. Gurram Paapi Reddy is a film that has a simple setup and evokes passable comedy.
But just when you think things will go to the next level, the film is stretched for no reason and ends up boring the audience.
On the whole, Gurram Paapi Reddy is the same old crime comedy with a few passable comedy scenes that click. However, the predictable storyline and dragged scenes take away the interest of the audience for the most part. Those who like crime comedies can give the film a shot.
